Glasses lens and frame care 101
To get the most out of the festive season, you need to be able to see everything around you, so looking after your eyewear is important. It’s easy to forget about good eyeglass care in all the excitement of Christmas, but you don’t want damaged frames or broken lenses to cause you to miss out on any memories. So, follow our handy glasses care tips, and we’ll teach you how to take care of your glasses to enjoy great vision and not miss a thing.
Break those bad habits
First, let’s lay down some ground rules on bad habits that you should avoid. Eyeglasses are designed to be worn daily but are delicate, with many parts that can get damaged if mistreated. When you take your glasses off, do you put them in their case, your pocket, or on the nearest surface? Placing your glasses anywhere except in their case can risk the lenses getting scratched.
Cleaning your lenses is where the worst habits tend to be picked up. People use all sorts of things to clean them, from paper tissues to clothing. Anything that is not a proper lens cleaning cloth can damage your lenses. This goes for both eyeglasses and sunglasses.
Our top 5 eyeglass care tips to take into the new year
We have five easy-to-follow tips to help you keep your specs safe and in good order.
Be cautious when removing your glasses
It’s easy to be careless when taking your glasses off, using just one hand or holding them by just one side of the frame. This can cause them to loosen and become misaligned, so they sit crooked on your face. Always use both hands and hold the arms of the frame to remove your frames.
Don’t wear your glasses on top of your head
Wearing your glasses on top of your head while not using them may seem convenient, but it’s not good for them. The arms of the frames can become stretched and will no longer fit well, which will cause them to fall down your face. It also increases the likelihood of the frames falling off your head, which could mean they could break or get damaged when they hit the ground. Instead, you should keep your glasses in their case or on a cord around your neck.
The best way to clean your prescription lenses
We’ve already mentioned that you shouldn’t use any old cloth or tissue to clean your lenses; instead, you should use a proper microfiber lens cloth and specific glasses lens cleaner spray. It is important to note here that depending on the type of lens you have or the coating you may need a specific cleaner for this, as any other spray could damage the lens or coating.
Adjusting your glasses
Over time, the screws in your glasses can become loose, which can make the frames uncomfortable to wear. If left alone, a screw could even become completely undone and easily lost, rendering your glasses unwearable. It’s a good idea to have a small screwdriver so you can tighten the screws periodically, or if they become loose, send them off to be tightened before it gets worse.
Don’t let others wear your glasses
It may seem fun to let others try your glasses on, or maybe you think the prescription is near enough that someone can borrow them, but their different head shape could ruin the alignment.
